AKB48 – ORICON yearly single ranking 2011 and more!

2011 is finally winding down to a close! It would not be an understatement to say this year was the year of idols in Japanese mainstream music. More specifically, it was the year of AKB48 and their related groups and sub units. ORICON has released their annual best-selling singles ranking for 2011, and as predicted the top 5 belong to none other than AKB48. It is the first time in the 44-year history of ORICON that one artist has occupied the top 5 positions on the ranking.

Furthermore, “FLYING GET“, “Everyday, Kachuusha“, “Kaze wa Fuite Iru“, “Ue Kara Mariko“, and “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” are the only million-selling singles of 2011, establishing a new record for most singles by an artist to sell a million copies in one calendar year. Not since 2007′s “Sen no Kaze ni Natte” has there been a million-selling single, let alone five of them. From AKB48‘s major debut in 2006 up until now there has only been two such singles total, both by different artists.

The 7,346,000 total copies of singles sold by AKB48 this year set another new record.

Top 20 best-selling singles of 2011:

01.  ”FLYING GET” – AKB48 – 1,587,229
02.  ”Everyday, Kachuusha” – AKB48 –  1,586,840

18.  ”Zetsumetsu Kurokami Shoujo” – NMB48 – 263,187

20.  ”Kazoku ni Narou yo / fighting pose” – Fukuyama Masaharu – 255,572

Amazingly enough, all singles released by AKB48 and their two sister groups SKE48 and NMB48 are in the top 20. Nearly every one released by an AKB sub unit or soloist is in the top 100. And though released more than a year ago, ”HEAVY ROTATION” took the #52 spot while “PONYTAIL to Shu Shu” rounded out the top 100.

On the yearly albums ranking, AKB’s “Koko ni Ita Koto” is the 2nd best-selling album of the year with 829,645 copies sold.

The group’s massive sales this year also enabled them to take the crown in 7 of 16 ORICON yearly achievement categories:

Total sales by an artist: 16,280,000,000 yen*

Total copies of a single sold: 1,587,229* - “FLYING GET

Total sales from a single: 2,150,000,000 yen – “Everyday, Kachuusha

Indeed, AKB48 has become a powerhouse in CD sales, even in an age when physical CD sales have declined. There is simply no denying the magnitude of these sales records they’ve accomplished. 2011 will surely go down as a year to remember in Japanese music.

As someone who’s written countless posts about their milestone achievements this year, I have nothing else to say other than “wow”.
